Avoid These Dangers to Hardwood Floors

Most people who have hardwood floors want to keep them looking new for as long as possible. Unfortunately, however, sometimes a lack of information can interfere with this goal. To make your hardwood floor last for years, adhere to a few basic rules that will help prevent scratches and other damage.
The Dangers of Dirt and Grit
Dirt and grit are some of the biggest hazards a hardwood floor can face. These abrasive elements can create everything from fine scratches to gouges if they are allowed to sit on the floor and get tracked around the rooms covered by wood flooring. Combat dirt and grit by putting down rugs and mats in key locations. The entrance to each room is one such location, as are any entryways that connect to the outdoors.
Some families have a "socks only" rule in the house to assist even further with keeping dirt and grit at bay. In either case, be sure to sweep the floor on a regular basis to clear away stray bits of grit and dirt that have found their way onto your wooden flooring surfaces.
The Dangers of Water, Wax and Chemicals
Never allow water to stand on a wood floor. When mopping, dry excess water right away. Another common mistake is to use incorrect cleaners. Waxing a floor that has been finished with polyurethane will cause damage, as can using some chemical cleaners.
Repairing Damage
Eventually, all wood floors will need maintenance in the form of floor sanding and polishing to restore them to new. Contact a floor sanding company to arrange for these services.

Addressing Concerns About Hardwood Floor Sanding

Many people think of a floor as something that lasts a long while and then needs to be replaced. This perception most likely arises from familiarity with flooring surfaces that cannot generally be repaired, such as carpet or linoleum.

When such flooring becomes damaged or worn, the only viable solution is to replace it with new material.Hardwood Floor Sanding are different.Because wood is a natural material that exhibits a consistent structure all the way through a plank, when the top surface sustains wear or damage, it can be abraded off to reveal fresh, undamaged wood beneath. This process is known as floorboard sanding; it is usually followed by a fresh application of stain and lacquer or varnish to seal in the wood's new hue and natural beauty.

Despite wood's inherent ability to be renewed in this manner, some homeowners have concerns about the processes involved. One concern involves how common sanding methods may affect the long term stability of the flooring material. In general, floors can be refinished many times without affecting the durability of the wood. The exception is when the wooden planks making up the floor are exceptionally thin, but this is a rare circumstance generally appearing only in floors that are more than 50 years old and were installed in the years just after World War II.

Sanding a Floor is more problematic on floors that are not constructed out of authentic natural wood. If an engineered product such as laminate is used instead of wood, the amount of sanding it can take will depend on the thickness of the real wood layer on the surface of each plank.

Alder: A North American Hardwood

Understanding hardwood flooring options can help homeowners and renovators make the right decision for their particular circumstances. Although many tropical hardwoods are becoming trendy these days, also popular is Wood Flooring Sanding from species that originate in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. One example of such a wood is alder, known by the scientific name of Alnus rubra.

In its native region, alder is the most common hardwood to be commercially available. Trees in this species are very tall, reaching an average height of 90 feet, with many individual trees much taller. It takes an alder tree up to 40 years to mature, with some ready for harvesting as soon as 25 years after planting. Unlike some woods, ‘old growth’ alder is not advantageous for flooring; the quality of the wood begins to degrade after about 60 years of growth.

Alder wood has a grain that is much straighter than that of many hardwoods and is also advantageous because of its uniform texture. It takes well to floorboard sanding and readily absorbs stains, which means that people who have installed flooring made of alder can employ floor sanding services to help them renovate their dwellings when they feel it is time for a change. It is possible to sand off the previous finish and stain and apply a new colour to achieve a radically new look.

Such a change can transform the entire emotional feel of a room or home, which makes alder wood an excellent choice for anyone considering hardwood flooring.

To the layman, the term ‘hardwood flooring’ means floors that are made of any very durable wooden materials. In actual fact, however, the term ‘hardwood’ is both quite specific and also a little bit misleading, since not all hardwoods are hard.

What is Hardwood?

The term ‘hardwood’ refers specifically to wood that has been harvested from trees that belong to the classification angiosperm. Floor Sanding Cost Such trees cover a variety of species. In tropical and subtropical climates, hardwood producing trees are most often evergreen, but in more temperate habitats they tend to be deciduous trees which withdraw chlorophyll into their trunks for the winter months, thus leading to their leaves changing into autumn colours before falling off for the season.

Hardwood vs Softwood

The term ‘hardwood’ is an interesting turn of phrase, since some hardwood Floor Sanding are actually softer than ‘softwoods’, another classification. Softwood derives from coniferous trees. Both softwood and hardwood trees can produce woods that are very dense, and this is what gives wood used for flooring its durability. Yew, for example, is a hard softwood that can be used for flooring applications. However, there are many more types of hardwoods than softwoods - about a hundred times as many, in fact.

Restoring Your Wooden Floor to Perfection

Taking Care of Hardwood Floors

A Hardwood Floor Sanding represents a significant investment. As such, it should be carefully maintained in order to preserve its value. Most people with such floors in their homes take very good care of them, but sooner or later, the ravages of routine wear and tear will take a toll and the floor will need more than regular cleaning. It will require processes used to rejuvenate the floor so that it will remain beautiful for many more years to come.

Screening

This process involves abrading the floor surface in order to grind away the polyurethane used to finish it. Floor sanding services are recommended for this process, as it is difficult for non-professionals to perform this job well and a botched attempt will actually help to destroy the value inherent in a beautiful wood floor. After sanding, a wooden floor repair firm will refinish the floor by adding fresh coats of polyurethane or varnish. The result is a floor that once again has the kind of clean shine that people associate with hardwood floors.

Another option is a complete sanding of the floor sanding to remove all traces of varnish before refinishing. This more extensive process is usually employed when damage to the floor is more extensive.

Caring for Your Restored Floor

It can be devastating to have a newly refurbished floor sustain damage. To take care of it so it will last for years, cover furniture legs with protective pads and be cautious when moving such items, particularly if they are heavy. Also be aware that high heels can scratch wooden floors.

The Role of Flooring in Staging a Home for Sale

Most home sellers are aware of the need to “stage” a home in order to position it for a faster sale at a higher price. Staging a home involves a great many different activities and elements. The goal of staging it is to present the home in the best possible light. This generally involves adopting strategies that will help it look both larger and cleaner as these are two qualities highly desired by the majority of home buyers.

The first step in staging is to take a critical look at the home as it now stands. Floor Sanding Bexley One of the most common techniques used in home staging is to remove some of the furniture in all or some of the rooms, as this has the effect of “opening up” the space so that it will look more spacious. This can even extend to removing items from the walls because blank wall space can tend to make a room “open up” even more.

A thorough cleaning is, of course, a necessity for staging, and when it comes to wooden flooring, it may be wise to contact a floor sanding company to come in and give the floor a brand new professional finish. After the floors have been refurbished, it is wise to arrange furniture in order to display it to best advantage. Your beautiful new wooden floors will do your sales potential the most good if they can be seen and admired as buyers come into your home.

Reclaimed Wood and Floor Sanding Yield Beautiful Results

Recycling is for more than aluminium cans and plastic bottles. Another way to "go green" is to decorate a new or existing home using wood that has been reclaimed from older construction being torn down. In some cases, consumers using this technique are able to get wood planks that are more than two centuries old.

Floor Restoration These planks already have a lovely aged look and merely need a skilled floor sanding firm to help them blend into the new decor. In some cases oiling and staining may also be desirable.

Scott Lang-mack has used older wood to build a new home done in a style reminiscent of the French region of Normandy. The choice of reclaimed wood has been a successful one. “I've never seen oak look like that except maybe in antique furniture” he says of his recycled wooden flooring. “The quality of the grain pattern and rarity is something that is special. You don't have to be a woodworker to appreciate it. All you know is when you view it, it's beautiful.”

Reclaimed wood, of course, means that fewer trees need to be harvested, but it also has other advantages. Lang-mack discovered that his reclaimed wooden floor was more economical than having a new hardwood floor installed, particularly if he wanted the same antiqued look. “Aging” a floor artificially is an expensive project, but refinishing wood floors that are made of naturally aged wood is relatively simple in comparison.

Basics About Bamboo Wood Flooring

One of the most interesting aspects of bamboo "wood" flooring is that the material is not composed of literal wood the way teak or walnut floors are. Instead, the natural grass of the bamboo plant is woven together into a durable hard surface that appears to be actual wood.

Bamboo wood floors are becoming increasingly popular and are a major choice for consumers interested in wood floor repair because bamboo is particularly Eco-friendly.Sanding Floorboards Some trees take more than 100 years to reach maturity but bamboo is a much more renewable resource with plants ready to be harvested for flooring after only five or ten years, after which a new crop can be planted. This greatly appeals to the modern consciousness.

Types of Bamboo Flooring

Consumers who prefer the "natural look" will want to choose natural bamboo flooring. These floors tend to retain the very light colour of bamboo that can be seen in the wild. This hue is somewhat reminiscent of the colours usually associated with beach and maple tree wood.

Carbonised bamboo, on the other hand, has been boiled as part of the manufacturing process. The application of heat causes the wood to darken so that it resembles more robust-toned woods such as oak.

A more highly refined version of bamboo flooring is strand-woven bamboo. Designed to produce a tougher, more "wood-like" floor, strand-woven bamboo flooring comes in both light and dark colours. Since it is strong and durable, strand-woven bamboo can more readily stand up to floor sanding and other refurbishment techniques designed to make an older floor look as good as new again.

Floor Refinishing Considerations With Cumaru

Cumaru is a type of hardwood popularly used in high-end flooring applications. A tropical wood, Cumaru comes from the tree known scientifically as Dipteryx odorata. Common names for this tree include Tonka Bean Brazilian teak. Floor Sanding Harrow This last name is by far the most descriptive since it tells you what type of tree produces the wood and where that tree typically lives.

About Brazilian Teak

South American Brazilian teak trees can reach heights of 120 feet or more, with the larger specimens boasting a trunk diameter as large as five feet across. Cumaru is known as a hardwood, but even among such woods it stands out for its hardness. Cumaru possesses a rating of 3540 on the Janka scale, making it harder than most woods commonly available for flooring; only four or five such woods can boast more impressive Janka levels.

Restoring wooden floors when they are made of such durable woods often involves sanding, but in many cases the floors can acquire a beautiful new surface when they are constructed of Brazilian teak. When it comes to restoring floors made of Cumaru, a floor sanding company able to guarantee a dustless technique is preferred since some people experience allergic reactions to small particles of this wood.

Brazilian hardwood comes from the rain forest, but not all Brazilian teak trees actually grow in Brazil. This wood can also be sourced in other South American nations such as Peru, with some wood coming from areas further north such as Costa Rica.

The first important fact to consider is that different kinds of hardwood flooring also have various types of surface coating, and each kind requires a different set of cleaning and upkeep procedures. Using the wrong cleaning or upkeep methods to care for your floor can possibly do your floor more harm than good and maybe even void your warranty, so it is very important to make sure that you have done your research and that you have followed the guidelines given to you by your retailer or in the documentation that came with the product.

Secondly, all kinds of hardwood floors require a gatekeeper, which means the presence of a good rug or walk-off mat that is situated at any point where there is an entrance to the outside world. A high quality doormat can protect your floor by trapping the grit, debris and water that is frequently carried along by people’s shoes, and is an excellent first line of defence.

Waxing a Wooden Floor

The DIY craze has exploded over the course of the last few years, largely thanks to home improvement programmes on television. Ideally, the liquid wood wax should include beeswax and carnauba, and possibly even some silicone elements, which add shine to wooden floors.

To begin waxing wood floors, first you need to seal them and wait a day or two. One part of linseed oil and three parts of mineral spirits can be mixed together to make your own cleaning fluid which, using fine steel wool, you can use to clean the surface of the wood.

Make sure you have ventilation in the room whenever you use mineral spirits! After an hour, you can then use a clean, soft cloth to buff the first coat of wax. Use two separate cloths to wax and buff, and then repeat the process. Wait six hours and do it again one last time.

Designers Prefer Engineered Wood Flooring

More and more designers are beginning to choose to use engineered wood flooring in the homes they are hired to decorate, rather than traditional solid wood. The technology behind engineered wood has increased in leaps and bounds in recent years and as customers have started to realize the benefits, so too have sales of engineered wood flooring begun to skyrocket.

Many high profile interior designers have been less quick to catch on to the craze but the signs are that even this is now changing.
Many are now starting to believe that engineered wooden flooring is of a very high quality and may even, in some circumstances, be a more practical option than traditional solid wood floors.

For example, engineered flooring is resistant to contraction and expansion, which is caused in traditional wood floors as a consequence of fluctuations in the atmosphere and the temperature of the room that the floor is in. Floor Sanding Kingston As such homeowners who choose to install engineered wood flooring in their houses do not have as much to worry about when it comes to buckling and swelling in their floors, which can end up requiring expensive wood floor restoration.

This change in attitude toward engineered flooring is possibly a reflection of the troubled economic climate all across the world. Both homeowners and interior designers are having to start to become a little more frugal wherever they can. While there is no doubt that solid wood flooring is still the best investment, with more and more people choosing to redecorate rather than move house, the investment reason is becoming less common.

Brightening up Wood Flooring

While the news about the emerging trend toward brighter colours for interiors might be inspiring for those people who are looking for completely new flooring, some may simply be looking to refurbish their current wood floors. The good news, however, is that this may be easier to do than many might have been led to believe.
Consumers who chose to buy Wood Floor Sanding London as a form of investment are the most likely to resist new fashions such as the trend toward brighter interiors as they believe they need to remain faithful to the original style of the flooring.

The truth is, however, that with a bit of floor sanding and refinishing, including a change in shade courtesy of stock-coloured finishes that are available in the great majority of Do-It-Yourself stores, the style of anyone’s wood flooring can be brought right up-to-date without in any way harming it or damaging the original investment. This can be a tremendous way of maintaining the investment as well as the inherent quality and beauty of wood flooring, while at the same time updating your home in order to give it a fresh new look.

Those who would prefer not to change the look of their flooring quite so dramatically can still find other alternatives, such as using a slightly brighter colour scheme for their home in general without actually altering the floor. This could perhaps involve simply adding some brightly-coloured rugs or even just changing some furniture or the colours of the walls.

Reclaimed Wood and Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are a beautiful natural product, with every plank filled with varying grain patterns. Their attractiveness and the ease with which they can be maintained have made them the most popular choice for home flooring in numerous countries throughout the world, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Realtor surveys have even demonstrated that houses with hardwood flooring sell a good deal faster than houses that feature predominantly carpeted floors, while many manufacturers of vacuum cleaners have even had to redesign their machines in order to take into account the popularity and growing predominance of wooden flooring.

Reclaimed wood is one style of wooden flooring that is becoming more and more popular. Cut decades ago, reclaimed wood is technically stable and has already endured cupping and twisting, with the unique patina often featuring such things as saw marks, nail holes and worming. Another part of the growing appeal of reclaimed wood for flooring is that it is about recycling, saving scrap wood from being dumped in landfills and giving it a new lease of life in the home. Homeowners also used to be intimidated by the price of reclaimed wood floors – but because of availability and advances in technology, prices have dropped considerably in recent years, making it a lot more accessible and affordable for the average buyer.

When it comes to refinishing floors, matte is also becoming more accepted, while the process of refinishing itself is a lot less inconvenient than it was a few years ago, with many companies now offering dustless floor sanding.

Mahogany Floors

For wooden flooring that adds an instant touch of class and has a smell all of its own, mahogany is the best choice around. Mahogany floors add immediate presence to a home and create an elegant and rich appearance.

Commonly found in the south of Mexico and through Central America to Argentina, mahogany was once widely available but has in recent years started to become a little more of a rarity, which only serves to make it even more of a wood flooring delicacy. Well known for its rich and deep reddish brown look, mahogany also has striping features and a complimenting even texture throughout the species. A bit of light is added to the species via the white sapwood, which shines throughout the heartwood of mahogany, making the lustre that mahogany exhibits so well and helps to make it so aesthetically pleasing.

There are a number of different kinds of mahogany that can be best suited to different purposes. The best kind of mahogany with which to create wooden floors is normally thought to be Santos mahogany, which is often used to create flooring for the simple reason that it is much harder and more durable than some other kinds of mahogany, meaning it is much better suited to dealing with the wear and tear of heavy foot traffic and sanding floorboards. Mahogany also has a natural fragrance, which provides any home with a mahogany wood floor with a pleasant and welcoming scent.

Cleaning up Dog Urine on Wooden Floors

It’s an embarrassingly common problem, yet one you rarely hear a solution to. How do you clean up dog urine from a wooden floor sanding in order to ensure no damage is done to the flooring that will end up needing you to invest in wood floor repairs?

Items you will need to clean up dog urine from wood floors successfully include paper towels, a paintbrush, baking soda, wood floor stain touch-up, a vacuum cleaner, sandpaper, a bucket, white vinegar, cleaning cloths, plastic wrap and hydrogen peroxide.

Once the ‘accident’ has happened, place paper towels over the stain, continuing to replace them with fresh towels as the previous ones continue to soak up the dog urine. Next sprinkle baking soda over the stain, allowing it to sit overnight so that it can completely absorb both the urine itself and the smell. In the morning, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda, and then wash the area of the stain with a wood floor cleaner.

For older urine stains on the wood floor, use straight hydrogen peroxide to saturate the stain, then soak a cloth with the same substance and lay it over the stain. A plastic wrap should then be used to create a poultice by laying it over the cloth and peroxide, and this should be left to sit overnight.

In the morning, remove the materials from the site of the stain and use a solution comprising one part vinegar and one part water to dampen a clean cloth and wipe the area, then dry it. If necessary, sand and stain the floor.

Wood Floor Chicken Vandal Man Convicted

An American man is facing as much as 18 years in prison after being convicted of vandalizing the home of his ex-wife and causing thousands in damages by putting raw chicken in her house’s air vents and using cheated hiking boots to tear up her wooden floors, resulting in the need for some very expensive wood floor restoration.

The 58-year-old Denver resident, Ronald Smith, a lobbyist, tried to claim that Michelle Young, his ex-wife, actually did the damage herself and then tried to pin the blame on him, but the jury was unimpressed with his version of events and after a six-hour deliberation found him guilty of criminal mischief and second degree burglary.

The case is just the latest example of wooden floors being treated badly during a nasty divorce. In 2009, contractor Matt Morgan was asked to install what he thought was the “ugliest floor” he had ever come across – a white oak, red oak and walnut floor – only for a woman he had never seen before to arrive just as installation was being completed and demanded to know what he thought he was doing to HER house. “I said, “EXCUSE ME?!” Morgan remembers.

Wood floor restoration can involve everything from floor sanding, lacquering, sealing, oiling and staining and is a specialist task that needs to be carried out by qualified professionals. It can be as relatively simple as removing small scratches from floors to a complex and complete overhaul of the existing floor.

Repairing Parquet Floors

Parquet wood floors can be very beautiful, but if blocks are damaged then it can become a serious problem. In order to carry out wood floor repairs on your damaged parquet floor without it being obvious to the naked eye, the damaged areas of wood need to be replaced with a parquet tile that matches the original pattern.

If it proves not to be possible to find a refinished parquet tile that is the same as the original, simply finish the tile yourself instead, in order to ensure the pattern is the same as the piece you are replacing it with.

If necessary use the whole tile, but if possible just use one piece of the unit or as much as is necessary – it is always best to make the area you are replacing as small as possible.

To begin the process, first remove the damaged piece of parquet floor sanding. If the whole unit or tile is damaged, make a row of big holes across the entire length of the block with a bit, brace or drill, and make sure to go against the grain. Drill the whole way through the damaged block but be careful to make sure the drill does not go into the sub floor underneath it.

Then use a hammer and a sharp chisel to gently split up the block and get up the individual pieces, being careful to avoid damaging the other pieces of parquet wood around it. Make sure the gap is ready for a replacement and use either one piece or the whole tile to fill it in.

Hardwood Flooring Tips

Even before a consumer purchases their hardwood flooring, there are a few tips that they should be made aware of before they do so in order to ensure they end up being completely satisfied.

One such tip is to acknowledge and seriously consider the fact that floors that are bought already refinished can be very, very convenient.

Being forced to leave your own home for days on end because you have a contractor staining, re-coating and sanding floorboards in your house is not a lot of fun. Then there is the fact that while some professional companies may leave your home spotless after they have finished, others may leave it covered in dust.

In today’s world, none of this is necessary with factory finished flooring that can be immediately installed and used with no fuss and a bare minimum of mess. restoring parquet flooring also means that every plank can move on its own to account for any changes in humidity in your house, which makes seasonal separations (otherwise known as cracks) in the floor far less noticeable.

Another tip worth paying attention to is that while coloured wood flooring can be stylish and even cool, there is little to beat the natural look of wooden flooring.

It is also worth remembering that not all wooden floors are or should be smooth. Texture is very popular these days, with hand scraped, reclaimed and even distressed wooden flooring having a classic look that also hides wear and scratches and has become a very popular trend.

Why Floor Sanding is Essential for Wooden Floors

Wooden flooring has many benefits, most of which are well known to the great majority of consumers including just the atmosphere that such flooring brings to a home, being immediately comfortable, inviting and warm. One of the disadvantages of wood flooring, however, is that it requires a regular maintenance routine in order to prevent greater damage from being done over the course of time.

Floor sanding helps to protect wooden floors and given that most people regard a quality wooden floor as an investment, it makes a great deal of sense not to skimp on the maintenance of that investment. In order for wooden floors to maintain their quality appearance and scratch free condition, then floor sanding is an essential part of that maintenance routine.

Floor sanding can also help in situations where an owner – or previous owner – of a wooden floor has previously failed to keep up such a regular routine of maintenance by helping it to regain some of its former lustre and shine. Likewise, any wooden floors that have started to lose that shine and have become somewhat dull in appearance can be either restored or even helped toward a new look altogether with floor sanding.
Floor sanding can also end up saving the consumer money in the long term, with it being able to prevent problems such as loose nails and planks from getting any more serious than they already are, although it is recommended that the majority of consumers should seek help from qualified professionals rather than attempt to do it themselves.

Wood Flooring Helps Create Spacious Atmosphere

The right kind of solid wood flooring can help to create the illusion of a more spacious atmosphere in a room, according to the experts. Rooms can look a lot larger than they might really be just with the implementation of a few simple design tricks and the correct choice of flooring can be a key part of that.

As well as advice on the savvy use of mirrors and cunning solutions for storage problems in order to prevent areas from looking cluttered, flooring also ranks very highly indeed for the impact that it can have on the perception of the size of a room.

Light-coloured flooring is recommended as being one of the best possible ways to create the illusion of spaciousness in an area as it tends to brighten the room as a whole and thus gives the impression of natural light. Clearly, the lighter the flooring option chosen, the larger the room will appear to be and that is one reason why white solid wood flooring is a very highly recommended choice, with anyone who is currently refinishing wood floors in a small room being advised to then paint the floor white.

Customers are also being advised that another good idea to maximize space in a room is to go for plain flooring, as patterned floorings also tend to create the perception of clutter.

The best option for small rooms, therefore, would appear to be a light solid wood flooring choice that only has very subtle grain markings.
